The Short Version
Agentforce is Salesforce's platform for AI agents — digital team members that can understand a request, look up the right information in your Salesforce data, and take action, such as updating a case, checking an order, or booking a meeting.
If you already use Salesforce, Agentforce works on top of the customer data you already have. You don't need a separate AI system that knows nothing about your business.
Agent vs Chatbot: What's the Difference?
Most business owners have seen chatbots that answer from a fixed script and say "Sorry, I didn't understand" when you go off-script. An AI agent is different.
| Traditional chatbot | Agentforce agent | |
|---|---|---|
| How it understands | Keywords and fixed menus | Natural language — customers can ask in their own words |
| What it knows | Only what was scripted | Your Salesforce records and knowledge articles, in real time |
| What it can do | Mostly answer questions | Answer and act: update records, create cases, schedule meetings |
| When it's stuck | Loops or gives up | Hands the conversation to a human with the full context |
How an Agent Works (Without the Jargon)
Think of setting up an agent like onboarding a new employee. You give them three things:
- Topics — their job areas. For example: "Order status", "Returns", "Appointment booking". Each topic tells the agent what kind of requests it should handle.
- Instructions — the rules. Plain-language guidance such as "Always confirm the order number before sharing details" or "Never promise a refund; create a case for the returns team instead."
- Actions — the tools. The things the agent is allowed to do, such as look up an order, create a case, or send a confirmation. These are built with standard Salesforce tools (Flows, Apex, and prompt templates), so they follow the same business rules your team already uses.
When a customer or employee asks something, Agentforce's reasoning engine works out which topic fits, which actions to run, and in what order — then responds in plain language.
Where Can an Agent Work?
- Your website — as a chat window for customers
- Messaging apps — such as WhatsApp or SMS, through Salesforce's messaging channels
- Inside Salesforce — as an assistant for your sales and service teams
- Customer portals — built with Experience Cloud
- Slack — for internal teams
Is It Safe to Let AI Touch Customer Data?
This is the right question to ask. Agentforce runs on Salesforce's Einstein Trust Layer, which is designed to protect your data. Among other things, it can mask sensitive information, check responses for harmful content, and keep an audit trail of what the AI did.
Just as important: an agent can only do what you allow. If you don't give it an action to issue refunds, it cannot issue refunds. It also respects the permissions you set in Salesforce. We cover this in more detail in our article on rolling out AI agents safely.
What Results Can You Expect?
Results depend on your processes and data quality, but businesses typically use agents to:
- Answer common questions instantly, 24/7, without adding headcount
- Free up staff from repetitive work like "Where is my order?" requests
- Respond to new leads in minutes instead of hours
- Give customers consistent answers based on your real data
The best results come from starting small and specific — one clear job done well — and expanding after you see it working.
Is Your Business Ready? A Quick Checklist
- ✅ You already use Salesforce (Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, or similar)
- ✅ You have a repetitive process that takes up your team's time
- ✅ The data the agent needs is in Salesforce and reasonably clean
- ✅ You can clearly describe what "good" looks like for that process
- ✅ Someone on your team can review the agent's work in the first few weeks
If you ticked most of these, you're a good candidate. If not, the first step is usually cleaning up data or simplifying the process — and that work pays off even without AI.
What About Cost?
Salesforce prices Agentforce separately from your existing licenses, and its pricing models change over time. Check current pricing with Salesforce or a partner before you plan a budget, and include the cost of setup, testing, and ongoing improvement — not just the license.
Next Step
The easiest way to start is to pick one process your team repeats every day and ask: "Could an agent handle the first 80% of this, and pass the rest to a human?"
